PNoy took wrong tack on Kirams, says analyst by Kathlyn dela Cruz, ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 03/05/2013 7:59 PM | Updated as of 03/05/2013 7:59 PM Kiram group only wants attention, not war, says UP Prof. Wadi MANILA -- Professor Julkipli Wadi, dean of the Institute of Islamic Studies in University of the Philippines Diliman, on Tuesday called the advisers of President Aquino on the Sabah conflict "newbies" because of the way they're dealing with the Sulu Sultanate as well as the crisis in Borneo. Speaking with radio dzMM, Wadi said all presidents, except Aquino, gave their full support to the Sultanate of Sulu's claim on Sabah. He also noted that the current administration seems to have shifted its stance on the Sulu Sultanate and its claim on Sabah. "'Yung pattern ng polisiya ng iba't-ibang gobyerno simula ng panahon ni President Diosdado Macapagal ay full support sa posisyon ng Su...

Covering PNoy's Failures

Covering up his failures THREE years into his administration, President Aquino is still looking for scapegoats for his incompetence. After doing precious little in the last few weeks but to inflame a perilous situation in Sabah, Mr. Aquino on Monday accused officials of the former administration of conniving with the Sultan of Sulu to create a crisis with our neighbors to the West. In a manner we have now grown accustomed to, the President did so with no evidence —and no names, banking again on the power of innuendo and suggestion to ascribe guilt to parties other than his own bumbling officials. In truth, it was a complete failure of intelligence that his administration was unable to monitor the movement of an armed contingent—more than 200 people—who sailed from Sulu to Sabah, Malaysia, to dramatize the historic claim of the Sulu sultanate to what is now a de facto Malaysian state. If his vaunted intelligence forces were able to discern a hidden hand behind the Sulu crisis,...

Sen. Pia: Ensure safety of Filipino women, children and elderly caught in Sabah conflict Senator Pia S. Cayetano today backed government efforts to extend humanitarian aid to Filipinos affected by the escalation of violence in Sabah, particularly women, children and elderly whose lives have been put at risk by the conflict. "Women, children and the elderly are the most vulnerable sectors and would need to be prioritized in times of crisis such as disasters, and in this case, an armed conflict," said Cayetano, who chairs the Senate Committee on Youth, Women and Family Relations. The senator said she is hopeful that the mission of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario, who is currently in Kuala Lumpur, would help facilitate government efforts to ensure the safety of Filipinos and bring home the women, children and elderly who were reportedly part of Sultan Kiram Jamalul III's group that had encamped in Lahad Datu three weeks ago to press their ...

1,000 TAUSUG WARRIORS

http://www.senate.gov.ph/press_release/2006/0308_pimentel1.asp 1,000 TAUSUG WARRIORS WHO FOUGHT AND DIED AT BUD DAJO BATTLE DECLARED AS MARTYRS OF FREEDOM The Senate approved Tuesday night a resolution recommending that about 1,000 men, women and children from the Tausug tribe in Sulu who died in defense of their homeland against American colonial troops a hundred years ago be honored as martyrs of freedom. The senators in Senate Resolution No. 70, said the Tausug warriors and members of their families who fought the foreign invaders in the Battle of Bud Dajo deserve to be recognized for their courage and heroism. Seldom in history do we find such bravery as that displayed by the Tausugs at Bud Dajo, said Minority Leader Aquilino Nene Q. Pimentel, Jr. (PDP-Laban), principal author of the resolution. The senators proposed that March 6 of 2006 and every year thereafter be declared as Bud Dajo Day in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of the defenders of the Bud Dajo fo...

The Decades of Sultanate Dispute

Tony La Viña Watch out for my Eagles Eyes column in the Manila Standard tomorrow. It is on the events unfolding in Sabah and concludes with the following paragraphs: "There was a reason that the decision was taken, after Merdeka, Jabidah, and Marcos’ fall, to simply leave the issue dormant, that there were dangers attendant to the claim. Should the dispute turn ugly, it will have unwelcome consequences for the Philippines, Malaysia, and our major regional and global allies. It could undermine the mutual non-intervention foundations of ASEAN, threatening the organization’s integrity in the face of Chinese territorial ambitions, and that country’s growing rivalry with the United States. Other countries might be forced to take sides, or at the least distance themselves from Manila and Kuala Lumpur for the duration of the dispute. Our growing economy would be harmed by prolonged conflict, particularly if it turns violent (again, even if short of war). We pr...

SPEECH OF MR. ALONTO ON THE PROBLEMS OF MINDANAO (Interpreted from Moro to English by Datu Mariaga Sa Ramain Alonto) Constitutional Convention Record, Journal No. 18, August 21, 1934. MR. ALONTO . Being one of the elected Delegates from the Province of Lanao, which I have the honor to represent in this Convention, I appear before you in a mood of enthusiasm to present to you the problems that confront the people of Mindanao and Sulu. You are aware of the fact that I am a Mohammedan by birth and by blood, that I am one of the Delegates representing one of the provinces in the Islands of Mindanao and Sulu. The Island of Luzon and the Visayas are predominantly inhabited by Christian Filipinos, the Islands of Mindanao and Sulu are also inhabited by Christian Filipinos. Mindanao, one of the three islands, is inhabited by Mohammedan Filipinos. Prior to the Spanish regime in the Philippines the Mohammedan Filipinos had been living a life in an independent way. They had thei...

Philippines: Largest Muslim rebel group 'on a war footing' Manila, 11 Jan. (AKI) - The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the Philippines’ largest Muslim rebel group (photo), has announced it is ready for war, if attacked. The statement, made by Eid Kabalu, MILF military spokesman, is a response to a recent comment by interior and local government secretary Ronaldo Puno threatening to stop talks with the MILF."We are open to all possibilities. We have the right to defend ourselves in our homeland," Kabalu said, quoted by daily The Sun Star’on Friday. However, he asserted that war was the last resort.A day earlier, the MILF official website, Luwaran, cited Puno as saying: "If the MILF doesn't want our agreement, if they do not want to respect our Constitution, then let us stop negotiating and just continue with the war.”The rising tension follows the latest stumbling block that has, at least temporarily, halted peace talks between the two sides. In Decemb...
